Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
