As any major awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
