Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
