The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
