Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he admitted that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
